This year, the National Snowboarder’s Association has announced a big milestone: The association will mark the 100th anniversary of the first snowboarder to cross the finish line at the Winterplace Ski Resort in California.
The association has already been awarded $25 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation and $50 million from the National Park Service to help build the resort.
It will also build a ski resort at the resort, with the intent of making it the first in the world to offer snowboarding on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada.
“It’s a historic moment, to be honest, and we feel we’ve done a great job,” says Bill Haney, the president of the National Ski Areas Association.
“We’ve put together a great foundation.
We’ve done it very quietly, but it’s not easy.
We have to make sure that we’re in the right place at the right time.”
The snowboarders first landed at the ski resort in 1938.
Today, the ski area is known for its wintertime, white-slipped trails, snow-capped peaks, and its unique wintertime terrain.
Its snowboard trails and trails in the park were named the White Mountains by a local ski resort.
The area also features some of the nation’s best snowboard parks, including the famous Gold Rush Trail and the Big Sur Trail.
“When we first got to the White mountains, there was a lot of interest in the area,” Haney says.
“The idea was, we could have this, let’s put a ski-and-snowboard area up there.
We wanted to make this a great winter destination.”

Today the area hosts many winter sports such as snowshoeing, snowboarding, skiing and snowmobiling.
The White Mountains ski resort is one of the few ski areas that offer winter sports in California today.
Haney said the association has had some pushback from some snowboard resorts, but the ski resorts association is trying to keep the industry going.
“This is not a matter of whether they’re going to make money, it is whether they are going to be successful,” he says.
The ski area has hosted the annual Winter Sports Festival for 25 years and has been a host of the Winter Ski Racing Championship for the past three years.
The resort has had a lot to do with the development of the area and is a testament to the ski industry in the state.
“Our business model is a business model that has been around for 25 to 30 years, and that’s the beauty of this,” Haney says.
One of the ski areas first ski lifts, the White Mountain Lift, was built in 1937.
It was used by many skiers and snowboards from the early days of the industry, and many people still visit the lift today.
“That lift was one of those rare things that actually brought a lot more people to the area than just people coming here for the ski season,” Hanes says.
Hanes is optimistic about the future of snowboarding in the Sierra.
“I think snowboarding is in the best shape it’s ever been in,” he said.
“Snowboarding has become the big business in the United States, and I think that’s good for the country, and good for our industry.”
